The legendary team behind the 2024 black comedy Invalid has joined forces with Brno-based production company GNOMON on a new project. Director Jonáš Karásek, screenwriter and lyricist Maroš Hečko, producers Jan Hubáček and Peter Veverka, and cinematographer Tomáš Juríček are currently shooting a new comedy titled The World According to Adam. The film is set to hit theaters in 2027.
The World According to Adam will be an engaging, audience-pleasing comedic “extravaganza.” The film tells the story of famous Czechoslovak singer Adam Zemina, who, at the twilight of his career, creates an exceptional and magical musical work. However, its creation is met with forceful censorship, sparking a chain of events that impacts the entire community. The narrative then shifts to a depopulating village facing social challenges. The residents decide to take fate into their own hands and confront the issues troubling them. These are precisely the themes the film explores through a comedic lens: youth migration, the fight against corruption, respect for the elderly, self-determination in choosing our life paths, and social unity. However, the filmmakers promise to deliver all of these motifs with humor, perspective, and music. Filming is taking place in both the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The cameras first rolled at the Koliba film studios in Bratislava and at the Slovak National Theatre. The crew is now relocating to Brno to shoot in historic interiors as well as the distinctive streets of the Moravian capital and its surroundings. The final leg of production will take place in Španiat Dolina, Slovakia.
All-Star Cast
The lead characters will be portrayed by Bolek Polívka, Zuzana Kronerová, Viktória Jurištová, and David Hartl. The ensemble cast also features Marek Vašut, Anna Polívková, Lukáš Latinák, Daniel Fischer, Emília Vášáryová, Sväťo Malachovský, Oľga Belešová, Gregor Hološka, Peter Šimun, Marek Majeský, Zuzana Fialová, among others.
“We are thrilled that we managed to assemble such a fantastic team—both behind and in front of the camera. We take great pride in every project we have brought to life together, and our ambitions are just as high for The World According to Adam,” said producer Jan Hubáček.
A Tight-Knit Team
This is far from the creative team’s first collaboration. Most recently, in 2024, they brought audiences the now-cult black comedy Invalid, which converted 8 out of its 13 nominations into wins at the Slovak National Film Awards (Slnko v sieti).Their previous joint projects were equally successful, including the drama Amnesty (Amnestie, 2019; 7 Czech Lion nominations), the thriller DOGG (2017), and the feature film The Candidate (Kandidát, 2013). Marking their fifth shared project, it gives the filmmakers the space to push their creative collaboration even further.
Music-Driven Film
Since the central character of the comedy is a musician, the film will also be a rich musical work. Audiences in theaters will enjoy 21 short songs that form a distinct emotional storyline throughout the film. Grounded in ethno and folk traditions, they draw on various musical genres as required by the unfolding story. The core instrumentation includes cimbalom, violin, double bass, piano, drums, and a brass section. The songs were composed by Stano Palúch, tailored specifically to fit each actor and their vocal range. The dance numbers feature Brno’s Military Art Ensemble Ondráš and Bratislava’s University Art Ensemble Technik.
The musical comedy The World According to Adam is a co-production between AZYL Production, GNOMON Production, CinemArt SK, and TV JOJ.
The development and production of the film were supported by the Audiovisual Fund. Audiences can look forward to seeing it in theaters in 2027.
