About

The story of the comedic “live-broadcast film” Spálený in My Head unfolds in November 1989 in the Červenka family’s apartment in Brno. The father is a fervent communist and an employee of the Czechoslovak State Railways, while the mother has worked in a butcher shop ever since finishing her apprenticeship. Jiřina Červenková is their thirty-year-old daughter. She is single, works as a postal worker, pays little attention to her appearance, and adores the songs of Petr Spálený. Her room resembles a museum dedicated to the singer, filled with vinyl records, clippings, huge posters, and autographs.

All her life, Jiřina has had to submit to her parents’ will, and this hasn’t changed even in adulthood. She endures constant remarks about her behavior, her looks, and her decisions, which she ultimately always has to change “for the good of the family.” She is frequently questioned, interrogated, and most often receives advice from her father on how relationships between men and women work.

Her father’s mood worsens drastically due to the unfolding Velvet Revolution, and his desire to control Jiřina’s life escalates. After all, as a train driver, he knows best how to steer things! Running out of patience, he comes home one day and presents his daughter with three suitors at once! And since Jiřina likes Petr Spálený, he brings her three mustachioed men she has never seen before. Dušan is a young, sleazy engineer; Juraj is a bodybuilder from Žilina; and Milan is the father’s sixty-five-year-old colleague from the ČSD.

Will Jiřina be able to stand up to her father, just as the people are rebelling in the streets of Brno, where demonstrations and a general strike are taking place? Will her mother finally stand up for her daughter and defy her husband? And should the father finally be told the truth that his daughter has had a partner for a long time? During the premiere of this project, which was broadcast live on the internet, viewers decided the development of the story and the fates of its characters through their voting.

The film is available to watch on iVysílání.
